ADDITIONAL SERVICES.

Let’s look at some of the additional services and options available for our members with their mobile phone service, such as text messaging, picture messaging, Voicemail, data, Blackberry, roaming, and our Replacement Phone Service:

 

Text messages, frequently referred to as SMS, can be sent to any other mobile number, anywhere in the world. They are charged for each 160 character message, but on some phones customers can write and receive longer messages and these are seamlessly sent or received as a series of multiple messages.

 

Picture messages, sometimes known as multimedia messages or MMS are similar to text messages but also include pictures, sound or text and can be received on any handset that is MMS compatible. Picture messages are charged per message and are more expensive than text messages.

 

Answer phone.   If a member has their mobile phone switched off, is busy on another call, or not in network coverage, they can set up a voicemail service to take messages from callers, just like an answer phone. They can listen to their messages (known as voicemail retrieval) using their handset at anytime. Listening to messages people have left for you is included within all our call bundles, but if a customer exceeds their inclusive allowance it is chargeable at the appropriate pence per minute rate for their tariff.

Browsing the internet or downloading emails is possible on some handsets, usually known as Smart Phones. Any data sent or received using their mobile is chargeable. Customers can either purchase a data bundle from us, giving them an allowance of 300Mb each month, or they can pay individually for each megabyte of data they actually use. We recommend that members who regularly use data should take our optional data add-on, as it will work out much cheaper for them. There is also a data service available on some older handsets call WAP, which is charged on a pence per minute basis, although this has never been popular and is now being superceded by Smart Phones.

Roaming. All customers are able to make calls to international destinations, and also to make or receive calls whilst they are ‘roaming’ on compatible mobile networks in foreign countries. Subject to the type of handset they have chosen,  they can also send or receive data whilst roaming. Using a mobile phone overseas, either to make or receive a call, is charged at much higher rates than using a mobile in the UK, and is not included in any of the bundles we offer. To protect customers, all SIM cards we provide are supplied with a roaming bar - customers will have to call customer services before they travel to activate this service, and may be required to pay a deposit. Customers with Smart Phones should be aware that sending or receiving data whilst roaming can be incredibly expensive – for example, downloading a film to their handset could cost literally thousands of pounds. Customers wanting to access their email whilst overseas will find that using a BlackBerry is much cheaper than a Smart Phone.

International calls. In order to provide cheap international calls, we have to route them from our mobile network onto the same international network we use for our Home Phone service. This means that even if you have chosen to Pay as you Go for your calls, any international calls you make will be supplied on a pay monthly basis and charged on your next monthly bill. We therefore supply all Pay as you Go SIMs with an international call bar, so the member responsible for paying the bill is still in control their monthly bill, and can decide whether to allow other members of their household access to this type of call if they want to.

Replacement Phone Service. For a small additional monthly charge our members can elect to take our Replacement Phone Service (RPS) which guarantees that if their mobile is lost, stolen or damaged the customer will receive a replacement handset within 24 hours of notifying our Customer Service Team. To protect ourselves against fraudulent claims, a customer can only register for RPS within 14 days of taking out the initial mobile phone service contract or when upgrading to a new phone.
